What is CIP?

The China Internship Program is a unique initiative in which Dutch, Finnish, American and Chinese universities work together with industry to develop international IT talents, facilitated by CHECK-IT. The students from different cultures work together on projects provided by real international companies with real clients, particularly Chinese software companies. Check-IT resides in Xiamen Software Park, a major technology hub with more than 1000 startup companies. By working on these projects, the students gain work experience for their future jobs. Some examples of what Check-IT can do are: 3D game design, multimedia projects, websites, database building, software systems and encrypting.

History of CHECK-IT

In November 2007, the delegation of Institutes of Higher Education in the Netherlands visited the software park during the meeting with Xiamen University and had the idea of collaborative construction of a training base. One year later, the delegation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Software School of Xiamen University, beginning the CHECK-IT Center. Since then, a total of 217 Chinese Students and 189 International Students have completed the program together.

  • Xiamen University is a world class University with the goal of transforming the field of software education and training.
  • Leiden University is the most prestigious University in the Netherlands. They specialize in research and have over 50 affiliate schools. They currently have 23000 students and award over 5000 diplomas every year. Albert Einstein once gave lectures there.
  • Zuyd is a highly rated university with strong degree programs, developmental research and ample international programs.
  • The Hague University is at the center of an international trade center, and has a focus on globalization through their exchange programs. Every year they take in over 500 new exchange students.
  • HAN University trains students to tackle today's problems from a professional perspective. Home to 30000 students, of which 2100 are exchange students. Also the home of Buro302, a creative media mob.
  • Laurea University has a student-centric focus that drives its students to become professionals in a changing world.
  • Windesheim University focuses on Practical research and collaborates with groups in the professional field to give students hands-on experience.
  • Minnesota State University Mankato offers high quality education to students based on the principles of Big Ideas and Real-World Thinking. Offers top-notch education to a diverse group of students.

Program Details

Internship and International Technology Minor

Students can participate through an internship taken within their major, or as a part of the International Technology Minor offered by the Department of Computer Information Science (CIS).

Students that participate qualify for completing their International Minor in the CIS department and can earn up to 18 credits during the internship program. Students should talk to their internship coordinator to learn how many credits they need to satisfy their internship requirement. Students should talk to their advisor or the chair of the CIS department to their International Technology Minor.

Enrollment and Tuition

Minnesota State University, Mankato students enroll in either an internship or an international minor and pay tuition to MSU, Mankato. The credits earned during the CHECK-IT internship program apply to students’ MSU, M degree programs.

CHECK-IT Center

The CHECK-IT Center occupies almost 1000 square meters. It is divided into the main lab, a meeting room, a coffee bar, and two lecture rooms. The Center is equipped with advanced computing, featuring IBM and Dell servers, hi-res scanners, projectors, and a high-speed network.

The center provides all the hardware and software needed for projects, but students are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops for day-to-day use.

Please be advised that this is not a paid internship position.

Project Duration and Schedule

The program runs for 20 weeks, and is offered in both spring and fall. Fall term runs from August to February and the spring option runs from February to June. MSU, Mankato students are encouraged to participate during the spring session, because it aligns better with the MSU, Mankato academic calendar. Spring term of 2016 begins on February 15, 2016. Students must arrive in Xiamen, China on February 12, 2016 or sooner.

Travel Requirements and Paperwork

Contact the International Program Office for information on the study broad process.

All CHECK-IT participants will be required to obtain a visa to enter China.

Room and Board

  • The housing provided to Check-IT participants is close to the CHECK-IT center and costs about $200 monthly
  • Food costs will be approximately $150 Monthly
  • Incidental expenses typically add up to somewhere between $50 - $150 a month

What does CHECK-IT stand for?

How many internship hours can I earn?
Will I need to learn Chinese?
You will not be required to learn Chinese for any part of the Program. However, if you wish to immerse yourself in Chinese culture, it would be extremely worthwhile to learn Chinese.
When is the best time to participate?
MNSU students are encouraged to participate during the spring session.
What is the difference between CIP and Check-IT?
CIP is the name given by MSU, Mankato to attract students to apply for this internship opportunity. Students selected by the CIP committee will automatically be accepted by CHECK-IT.
